One thing good about Macau is that there are toilets when i want them - and they are almost anywhere, and very clean.

Previously it was called the Leal Senado Building (and the surrounding plaza is called Largo De Senado). Leal Senado is Loyal Senate in Portuguese and the governing body then did not recognize Spain's sovereignty when Spain occupied Portugal for 60 years from 1580 to 1640 (the Dutch took over Melaka in 1641) when King Sebastian died heirless and the Spanish King took over.
Now it is called Instituto para os assuntos civicos e municipais atau dalam bahasa malaysia nya bangunan pejabat sivik dan hal ehwal perbandaran, now occupied by the mayor and the city hall.
Surprisingly, it is open to public - you should go and see the small garden they have upstairs.
Now, imagine the government allows the public to visit Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad. .

Fisherman's Wharf, Macau
|
|
If you take the boat from Hong Kong, you would see this new area across from the Jetty. there were a number of shops open, a lot of them are restaurants - probably this area was just opened. However, it is quite a nice place to walk as it is just next to the sea.
There are a number of architectural designs - each block is different from the other. Now I know where the developer in Bandar Baru Kampar (UTAR site) got his idea from. It is like a collection of mini-cities or design - venice, dutch, british etc.

Macau Icon

My image of Macau since the early 80s was this building. It is the Ruins of St. Paul's, which also houses the Museum of Sacret Heart.
The Ruin is actually the ruin of a church built by "the Jesuits in 1602, was destroyed by fire in 1835". Melaka's St. Paul's Church was completed in 1590, and is also now in ruins.
We went to the Ruin both at night and during the day. At 1100pm, the Ruin, which is situated within the city center was full with people. There were a lot of dog walkers, and there's even a memorial built for the dogs. Walking back was very safe too, except for the dog poos.

Musium Makau

We went to the Macau Museum, which, amazingly is very nearby - about 15 minutes walk from our hotel. The Museum is situated on a hill, within a fort that was built by the Portuguese.
The Fort is almost similar in design (star shape) to A Famosa in Melaka (now in ruins) and Galle Fort (now very much alive and is in World Heritage list) in Ceylon. The Museum is new though, and it is way better than the ones of the many in Melaka

View from Macau Tower
|
|
you can see almost all of Macao from the top of this tower - it is a small enclave of land around 24sq miles - kira 6 batu kali 4 batu (ye ke). They said the tower is owned by Stanley Ho, yang katanya mempunyai kasino dan pelbagai hartanah di sini.

Macao Day and Night
|
|
Here is where all the people go day or night. You will always find people out and about around the casinos even at 3am. Good news for the Macanese because it was translated into a USD5billion business last year, which surpassed even Las Vegas.
Last week, the Star had a full page advertisement for a casino to be opened in Macao. By 2010, there will be around 30 casinos, up from 25 this year. Our tour guide told us that those who work in the casinos earn in a month what a normal Macanese earn in a year. I dont know whether this is true or not.

Leal Senado Square

This square is very near to the hotel we stayed. You will notice the wavy cobblestone design, which reminds me the maritime connection. I believe this was The place to be for the Portuguese and the Macanese.
